Type 304 stainless steel alloy is part of the stainless steel austenitic of the T-300 series. It has chromium at a maximum level of 18%, nickel at 8%, and carbon at 0.08%. It is thus defined as nickel and chromium-based austenitic alloy.
Stainless Steel 304 Sheet is made up of an austenitic stainless steel that has 18% chromium and 8% nickel in the composition. ss304 steel plate is the most used grade of all stainless steels in the world. The ss304 stainless sheets are strong, mild corrosion resistant and have applications in a variety of industries.
Grade ss316 is an austenitic grade which is second only to 304 in commercial usage. 316 stainless steel contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance. This is particularly apparent for pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. However, the increase of nickel content and the addition of molybdenum in 316 makes it more expensive than 304. On average, the price of 316 stainless steel 40% higher than the price of ss304 .
316L stainless steel is almost identical to 316. The only difference is the carbon content. 316L’s lower carbon content imparts even better corrosion resistance than 316. 316L does not require post-weld annealing.
